Fluoridation

It consists of administering fluoride to prevent carious lesions and to strengthen the enamel along with the tooth structure. Fluoride is an element that transforms hydroxyapatite crystals (a constituent element of enamel) into fluorapatite, which is more resistant to the acidic demineralizing action of bacterial plaque.
Fluoride can be obtained in two ways, through topical fluoridation and systemic fluoridation.
Topical fluoridation
It is a procedure that has no age limit, it can be done by the patient himself at home or by a doctor in a dental clinic. In the first case when the patient does it himself, fluoride is assimilated by the use of toothpastes or rinsing solutions that contain sodium fluoride.
While professional fluoridation in a dental clinic is performed by a doctor who accurately calculates the amount of fluoride and places it in the form of a gel on the surface of the teeth. This technique is recommended twice a year, along with professional cleaning.
Systemic fluoridation
In this case, fluoride is assimilated through drops or tablets taken orally. It acts on dental elements from the stage of their formation and can thus penetrate into the deepest layers of the tooth.
Therefore, it is important that systemic fluoridation be carried out throughout the entire period of tooth formation, a period that begins with the mother during pregnancy (as early as the 4th month of intrauterine life) and continues until the age of 12-13.
